Holistic Wellness and Self-Care: Healing Black & Brown Communities on Chicago’s South Side
In the heart of Chicago’s South and West Sides, communities of Black and Brown residents are experiencing historic shifts—both hopeful and challenging. With Chicago reporting a historic 29% drop in homicides in 2025 (CBS News Chicago) and the South and West Sides seeing a 28% decrease in shooting victims through the SC2 program (ABC7 Chicago), there’s renewed energy and resilience sparking community transformation. But amid wins like these, we cannot ignore the ongoing struggles, especially the 15% surge in domestic homicides (Block Club Chicago) and persistent violence in public spaces, such as the recent CTA Red Line incident (CWBChicago). This is why holistic wellness and self-care are essential for sustaining hope and healing in these vibrant, faith-filled neighborhoods.
Why Holistic Wellness Matters for Black and Brown Communities
Holistic wellness isn’t just about physical health—it’s about nurturing mind, body, spirit, and community. For many Chicagoans impacted by cycles of violence, trauma, and systemic barriers, healing requires an integrated approach that includes faith, emotional restoration, and practical empowerment. At Free My People Ministries (F.M.P.M.), founded by Minister Ahad Bey, we center our work on faith-based healing combined with trauma-informed care, reentry support, and community transformation. We partner with organizations like Community Partners 4 Peace (MPA), who are leading community violence interruption efforts, and Full Circle LLC, specialists in holistic reentry and transformation, to build lasting resilience in our neighborhoods.
1. Spiritual Renewal: The Foundation of True Healing
The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 40:31,
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”When trauma strikes, it can feel like strength and hope are gone. But faith provides a steady anchor. Make prayer, scripture reading, and worship daily practices to rebuild spiritual energy and cultivate peace amid chaos. F.M.P.M. encourages this daily spiritual nourishment as the first key to holistic wellness.
2. Trauma Healing Through Community and Compassion
Healing from trauma—whether from violence, loss, or systemic oppression—is a journey. Organizations like MPA witness firsthand how credible messengers and violence interrupters build trust and guide survivors toward healing resources. The SC2 program’s success shows that blending street outreach with social services can reduce violence while fostering emotional restoration on the ground. Participating in peer support groups or faith-based counseling can help release harmful stress, rebuild trust, and restore hope.
3. Empowering Financial Freedom & Stability
Economic empowerment is vital in breaking cycles of trauma. Financial stress impacts mental health and community safety. Through F.M.P.M.’s reentry programs in partnership with Full Circle LLC, individuals returning from incarceration receive transformative support—job readiness, digital empowerment, and life skills training. These tools not only foster personal stability but also uplift entire families and neighborhoods from generational hardship.
4. Cultivating Healthy Relationships and Boundaries
With the rise in domestic homicides reported recently, building strong, respectful relationships is urgent. Trauma can distort emotional responses, but faith and counseling offer tools to heal relational wounds. F.M.P.M. promotes teaching conflict resolution with love and patience, rooted in Colossians 3:13,
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”Healthy boundaries, open communication, and forgiveness can transform homes into sanctuaries of peace and trust.
5. Physical Self-Care as Spiritual Discipline
Faith teaches us that our bodies are temples (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Regular physical activity, nutritious food, and rest are spiritual acts that honor God’s gift of life. The ongoing challenges in neighborhoods like Rogers Park and CTA transit hubs remind us of the importance of personal and communal safety, but also of caring for ourselves fully—even amidst uncertainty.
6. Engaging in Community Violence Interruption and Peace-Building
Healing is also collective. Violence interruption programs and peace-building initiatives are grassroots efforts turning pain into purpose. MPA and SC2 are prime examples of how trusted local leaders stopping cycles of retaliation create safer, more thriving communities. Getting involved in these efforts or supporting them spiritually and practically helps us all move toward reconciliation and empowerment.
7. Positive Affirmations and Renewed Hope
In times of struggle, words can uplift the soul. Repeat affirmations like:
- “I am worthy of peace and healing.”
- “My community and I are strong, resilient, and full of hope.”
- “With God, all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
These declarations can shift mindsets and build faith, helping overcome feelings of despair.
